What changed

Known failures, repairs & fixes (14 documented)

Heat pump / Octovalve β€” no heat in extreme cold Service

Symptoms: Cabin blows cold in deep cold; a heat-pump pressure/temperature sensor misreads and the system stops heating. Affected many 2021–2022 cars.

Fix: OTA expansion-valve recalibration (Jan 2022); hardware fix replaces the Hi/Lo PT sensors (P/N 1510047-00-B, 1510048-00-B) and reseals the supermanifold. Workaround: precondition 30–60 min, use Auto + recirculate.

12V (low-voltage) battery failure DIY

Symptoms: Car won't wake, random electrical faults, dead doors/screen; can strand you. Lead-acid units often fail at 3–4 years (sometimes without warning).

Fix: Replace the 12V battery (~$100–125, ~30 min). Cluster/app usually warns first; act promptly. Newer Li-ion 12V lasts longer.

Window regulator failure (frameless-door 'short drop') DIY

Symptoms: Grinding / 'crunching potato chips' noise from a door, window slow or stuck. Frameless doors index the glass on every open, wearing the cable/regulator.

Fix: Replace the window regulator assembly, then recalibrate the window in Service Mode. Watch the isolator clamp (P/N 1101952-00) when removing the glass.

Phantom braking (Tesla Vision) DIY

Symptoms: Sudden braking/deceleration on Autopilot, TACC or FSD for shadows, overpasses, oncoming cars — or nothing. Worse after the radar→vision switch; tied to stale map data and false vision reads.

Fix: Keep software current (OTA refinements have helped a lot since 2022), keep cameras clean, lower set speed on poorly-marked roads. No single version eliminates it.

Front control-arm ball-joint squeak/creak Partial

Symptoms: Loud squeak/creak from the front when turning slowly or over bumps. Tesla under-greases the ball joint from the factory; water then washes out grease.

Fix: DIY: inject grease into the upper/lower ball joints (grease-needle adaptor, <$30) before wear sets in β€” many report it silences it. Tesla applies urethane sealant (SB-20-31-006, often temporary) or replaces the arm (~$1,000 OOW); aftermarket Meyle HD arms ~$362.

Trunk / liftgate / taillight water leak Partial

Symptoms: Water pools in the rear trunk well or inside the taillights after rain β€” from the liftgate seal, taillight gaskets, or blocked drains. The metal liftgate can hold ~16 oz before spilling in.

Fix: Tesla SB-23-10-003: reseal the liftgate (~1.8 hr) and replace lamp gaskets (Loctite 5510); free under warranty, mobile service can do it. Temporary: re-plug the liftgate drain holes. Some early reseals made it worse β€” newer sealant works better.

Charge port won't open / won't stay closed DIY

Symptoms: Port door won't open or the cable won't release; or it won't latch shut. Worse in freezing weather; a faint motor with no movement = actuator.

Fix: App β†’ Charging β†’ Open Charge Port, or press the door when unlocked. Manual release lever behind the left trunk-trim flap. A small adjuster screw on the assembly sets open/close travel; clean ice/debris. Replace actuator if failed.

Interior rattles & squeaks (A-pillar, dash, doors) DIY

Symptoms: A-pillar trim rattle (the most-reported), plus center console, door panels, dash and rear-seat squeaks. Clips loosen with temperature swings.

Fix: Felt/foam tape at the contact point fixes most cases for under $10; replace A-pillar clips (P/N 1017648-00-A). Note: the A-pillar trim contains an airbag β€” careful on removal. Factory rattles are covered 4yr/50k.

Touchscreen sluggish / freeze (MCU2 Intel Atom) DIY

Symptoms: Laggy maps/scrolling, occasional freeze or black screen needing a reboot. This is Intel-Atom aging β€” NOT the chronic MCU1 (Tegra) eMMC 'screen death' (which affected pre-2018 cars).

Fix: Reboot: hold both steering-wheel scroll wheels ~15 s. Keep software current. There is no official AMD Ryzen (MCU3) retrofit for the 3/Y.

No ultrasonic sensors β€” Tesla Vision parking DIY

Symptoms: USS removed (late-2022 builds onward): park assist less accurate at low speed/tight spots, jumpy distance map. Early sensor-delete cars temporarily lost Park Assist/Summon/Autopark.

Fix: Features were restored via OTA. Go slow in tight spots; some owners add an aftermarket 360/parking camera. (Pre-2023 cars keep USS but it can throw occasional faults.)

Drive-unit whine / half-shaft clunk Service

Symptoms: Rising hum/whine with speed (rear-drive-unit bearing wear, ~30k–80k mi); clunk shifting D↔R or on hard launch (worn CV/axle splines, or warped half-shafts on Performance).

Fix: Early fluid-related whine can ease with a drive-unit fluid change; worn bearings/gears need DU repair/replacement. Half-shaft vibration fixed with updated shafts (aftermarket ~$500–600/side).

Thin clear coat / rocker-panel rock chips Partial

Symptoms: Thin, sometimes soft clear coat; rock chips appear on rockers (ahead of the rear wheels) within weeks, especially on black cars.

Fix: PPF the rockers and front end (PPF is ~4Γ— the clear-coat thickness); add mud flaps. Touch-up + PPF for existing chips. Document defects at delivery β€” Tesla often deems chips 'customer responsibility'.

Highland stalkless turn-signal buttons lock out Free OTA

Symptoms: Touch turn-signal buttons become unresponsive after a finger rests on them ~60 s, or won't depress intermittently β€” leading to lane changes with no signal.

Fix: Largely software β€” keep updates current; lift your finger a couple seconds to reset. Tesla replaces the whole steering wheel under warranty for the known defect; aftermarket stalk retrofits (Hansshow) exist.

Highland early-build rattles, buzz & trim Partial

Symptoms: Early 2024 Highlands: rear-deck/center-dash rattle, buzzing door panels, cracked door LED light bars, dome light flicker.

Fix: Service reseats trim / replaces subwoofer for rear-deck rattle; felt tape at contact points; light-bar and arm-rest replaced under warranty.
